Harvest Winemaking Intern

Trestle Thirty One is a dynamic and growing luxury winery located in the beautiful Finger Lakes of upstate New York. We are looking for an intern for the 2023 harvest season who is self-motivated and excited to learn more about high end winemaking in a spectacular cool climate. This position will be exposed to all aspects of the business from assisting in the vineyards, in multiple cellars, as well as the tasting lounge. This position will be reporting directly to our owner and winemaker, who is a seasoned and accomplished industry veteran. The varieties utilized in the portfolio will provide exposure to Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, Chenin Blanc, and Merlot. The portfolio consists of primarily Trestle Thirty One, Snowshell Vineyards, with other private label brands as needed. This role may have the opportunity to transition to full time employment for the right candidate.

Key responsibilities include:
– Visit vineyards and take Brix and berry weight measurements pre harvest.
– Assist with coordinating harvest between vineyard teams and winery teams
– Keep inventory of winemaking supplies and move supplies between processing sites as needed.
– Monitor and/or perform grape sorting, inoculations, additions, maceration, racking, draining, pressing, barrel filling, and lab analysis.
– Taste fermentations and participate in fermentation monitoring and analysis tracking. The tasks include:
– Monitor fermentation health through Brix tracking.
– Create and maintain spreadsheet to track harvest dates, analysis, additions, and rates of additions.
– Assist at tasting lounge and make deliveries as required.
– Assist with bottling in late August for previous vintage wines

Minimum Qualifications
– High school diploma or State-issued equivalency certificate.
– Currently enrolled at a college or university and working towards OR have obtained a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in the school of Life Sciences, school of
Agricultural Sciences, or school of Engineering.
– Required to lift and move up to 45 lbs.
– Able to climb fixed stairs with handrails and vertical ladders.
– Required to be 21 years of age or older.
– Have valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
– Be able to work in the US.
– Experience computing mathematical formulas and basic computer skills.
– Required to work evenings, weekends and holidays when necessary.
– Must be available to work August – October 2023
– Desire to have fun and learn LOTS along with a fun and exciting team.

Preferred Qualifications
– Bachelor’s degree in Fermentation Science, Plant Science, Enology, Food Science, Wine Business, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Bioscience, Biology, Viticulture,
Biological Engineering, Winemaking or Chemistry.
– Prior winemaking and tasting internship or work experience.
– Familiar with Chemistry and Microbiology.
– Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
– Strong oral and written communication skills.
– Excellent organizational skills with experience managing multiple assignments.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

– Inside/Outside conditions: During Crush, work is estimated at 80% (but not limited to) outside, with weather of varying types.
– Wet/slippery conditions vary and may include work in the rain.
– Required to lift and move up to 45 lbs.
– Applicant must be able to climb fixed stairs with handrails and vertical ladders.
– Noise levels may vary. May be in situations where ear protection is required.
