Part-time position assisting Senior Editor of Wine Enthusiast magazine.

Senior Editor and California wine reviewer of Wine Enthusiast Stacy Briscoe is looking for a part-time tasting assistant to join her team in Sonoma, California. The role is a part-time position with an estimated time commitment of 8 to 10 hours per week, usually spread throughout two to three days each week. There’s an opportunity for more hours in the future for the right person.

The tasting coordinator manages the formal blind wine tastings for Briscoe, who is the Senior Editor of Wine Enthusiast magazine and reviews the wines of Northern California for the publication. The job involves handling all the wine samples shipped to her for review—this will include helping her retrieve submitted wines from her storage unit and transferring them to her home office, where she tastes. (Storage is exactly 2 miles, a 5-minute drive, from Briscoe’s home office.) The coordinator will be responsible for entering each sample’s pertinent data into a database, setting up and cleaning up blind tastings, and communicating with wineries and
members of the Wine Enthusiast team as needed.

The job is ideal for someone seeking to enter the wine business—whether a student, a new grad, or someone in a career change situation. Compensation is modest at $17/hour (in accordance with Sonoma’s local minimum wage ordinance), but associated perks include opportunities to taste California wines for personal education/enjoyment, to network with wineries, PR and media people, and to advance one’s knowledge of wine quickly.

This position includes the following key responsibilities:

  • Organizing wine samples
  • Entering submitted wines’ pertinent details into the Wine Enthusiast database
  • Setting up/cleaning up blind tastings
  • Communicating to wineries and PR personnel on behalf of Briscoe (Coordinator will have own Wine Enthusiast email account with which to conduct communications)

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years or older
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license
  • Must be commutable to the city of Sonoma
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Knowledge of the wine industry or experience a plus, but not necessary
  • Enthusiasm for wine—a must

Working Environment

  • The role is a part-time position with an estimated time commitment of 8 to 10 hours per week, usually spread throughout two to three days each week.
  • While wine organization and tasting is conducted at Briscoe’s home office in Sonoma, California, the coordinator is free to conduct any needed correspondence to wineries, PR, etc., remotely, so long as it’s done in a timely and professional manner.
  • Pay rate is $17/hour, paid twice monthly through Wine Enthusiast payroll.

Benefits

  • Opportunities to taste California wines for personal education/enjoyment
  • Network with wineries, PR and media people
  • Quickly advance ones knowledge of wine by working alongside a seasoned wine writer and educator
